Many of my favorite places to photograph are the small town forests and other open conservation lands that dot the map of New England. Visiting a favorite location multiple times throughout the year poses a challenge to see familiar things differently. Photographing the forest paths has been a recent project of mine, and has expanded to capturing these small footbridges that allow dry crossing over the small waterways or wetland areas that feed the main brooks and streams.

This image came from the Tucker Brook Town Forest in Milford, NH, which is one of my favorite southern New Hampshire locations because it is so rich in beauty and offers so many photographic opportunities. The negative was exposed in early January of 2010 after a fresh coating of snow that was not so thick as to hide the still pristine trail.

In the early Summer we have a full canopy in most of the forested areas in southern New Hampshire providing lots of warm, diffuse light in the morning hours. We also have the remnants of the Spring thaw and rains keeping our brooks and streams flowing nicely. This is an image from just downstream of the waterfall at Tucker Brook Town Forest in Milford, NH at the early part of Summer. The beautiful colors of Spring have already passed, but there is still much beauty to be seen here.

To capture the effects of the eddies in the stream I made a 45 second long exposure. I’m using the 4×5 view camera on this image, so it is tack sharp and enlarges nicely. A 30″ x 42″ print of this image hangs in Buchanan Hall at the Tuck Business School of Dartmouth College.

Turning around to look back at the path I recognized this as an image I needed to get. This was captured using the 1964 Schneider 90mm Super Angulon lens I bought from Peter Gowland using Fujichrome Astia 100f film.

This image is a part of my ongoing trails project and has the ID of RAP-09-61.
